Dr. Chitra Hardikar takes a conservative approach to restoring your damaged teeth in order to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. As part of this more conservative treatment philosophy, our dentist may recommend a dental onlay to repair and restore your damaged tooth. Dental onlays are a type of restoration used to repair teeth that have been broken or sustained damage from cracking or decay. Onlays are also known as “partial crowns” and, like a dental crown, are custom made to fit your tooth perfectly, fully restoring its shape, function and appearance. Unlike a traditional dental crown, however, a dental onlay will require little or no tooth preparation prior to being placed.
Our dentist will typically recommend an onlay when the damage on your tooth extends to one or more of the cusps (or pointed tips) of the tooth’s chewing surface. Onlays are made using more discreet material, such as porcelain or gold, to give you a less noticeable final result for your smile. Our dentist will examine your teeth and mouth thoroughly prior to providing your onlay to evaluate the extent of the damage to your teeth and determine if a dental onlay is indeed the right choice for your oral health and smile.
